Nabongo Cultural Centre: The Wanga Kingdom

Nabongo Cultural Centre in Matungu whoops-up the Wanga Community more proper the Abawanga, who are a “Nation of the Luhya Community” and the last remaining historical kingdom within modern-day Kenya. Today, the Abawanga number around 732,000 and survive the Nabongo King as their cultural monarch. The current Nabongo is Peter Mumia II. Historically, the Wanga Kingdom was the most highly developed and centralized kingdom in Kenya’s, until the advent of the British Colonial Era in the early 1900s. Started in 2008, Nabongo Cultural Centre depicts the past, present, and future ways of the longstanding Nabongo Kingdom.

In the days of yore The Wanga kingdom was a significant African empire, and the most organized structure of government in pre-colonial Kenya politically. It was a confederation of 22 co-equal clandoms or Tsihanga, further divided into Tsimbia. These, in turn, were divided into Tsingongo. The similitude of administration at all levels, excepting the family, was the Council of Elders, Abakofu bakali or Abakali be Lizokho, headed by a chief or Liguru. Nabongo Cultural Centre is located 35 km west of Kakamega town, at Eshiembekho in Matungu, via C31 Eshitinge-Esumeiya Road through Eshibuli market, Shianda center, Mumias town, and Matungu town.

The center celebrates the legacy of Nabongo Mumia, the most renowned Wanga king, who played a salient role in interactions with British colonial administrators. Some of the cultural exhibits include: artifacts showcasing Wanga traditions, such as royal regalia, traditional tools, and ceremonial items; and historical documents and stories detailing the Wanga’s lineage and influence. The architectural outlook featured in many of the structures reflects the Wanga people’s age-old cultural symbolism. Guided tours at Nabongo Cultural Centre help visitors understand the significance of various exhibits and the evolution of the famed Wanga monarchy.

That Kenya has a rich cultural diversity needs no introduction. It is an invaluable blessing to the nation. To foster an understanding of this heritage, there are cultural centers around Kenya that provide insights into the tapestry of cultures and traditions in their regions. These centers preserve and celebrate traditional practices and customs amidst the shift towards modernization and globalization.
