Mzima Springs: The Crown-Jewel of Tsavo West

Beyond the Shetani Lava Flow the parkway in Tsavo West National Park goes past otherworldly extensive lava flows, conical ash cone hills, and sensational ranges before arriving at Mzima Springs 25 km from Chyulu Gate. By way of Mtito Andei Gate Mzima Springs are 38 km away, passing Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge. Mzima Springs is one of the most iconic, fascinating and popular natural attractions at the incredibly picturesque Tsavo West National Park. Its clear waters, prolific wildlife, and unique underwater viewing experience make it a treat of any safari in Tsavo.

Here, in stark contrast to the out and out wildest savanna plains, the still, placid, magnificent crystal sparkling springs, surging tranquilly from the ground, form a graceful oasis that is sprucely girded by charming tropical palms and tamarinds. These series of propitious pools are rich in variegated species of fish, crocodiles and hippos. Their headwaters is a natural reservoir underneath the vasy Chyulu Hills, which act as a massive sponge, most of the rain falling on the ancient rock percolating downwards through them and flowing out as sizeable springs along the northern edge to replenish ample streams, the largest being Mzima Springs.

One of the unique features of Mzima Springs is the underwater viewing chamber, a submerged hide that allows visitors to observe hippos and fish in their natural habitat without disturbing them. Above ground the water is so clear that you can see the underwater life, of fish and aquatic plants, with ease. Consequently, the Mzima Springs are an important source of water for residents of Mombasa and other major townships, connected by a pipeline completed in 1966, elevating its importance to both aesthetical and economical. There is the “top pool” and the “long pool” from which the Mzima River flows to join the Tsavo River 7 km away.
