Mwonyo Valley: Contrast of Ecological Gamut

Areas where fertile mountains touch on dry plains are often marked by dramatic contrasts in climate, vegetation, and geography – an antithetical ecological gamut. These regions are typically found in locations where mountain ranges create rain shadows. Generally speaking, the physical presence Mount Kenya plays a critical role in Meru County. Situated just south of the Equator in Central Kenya, Mount Kenya divides the semi-arid shrubland from the central highlands by influencing the distribution of the rains. The mountain checks the rain clouds, north of which the dryland marches in stride with the mountain’s shadow, after breaking-up the clouds that pass over the lower coastal hills, sending over only torrid dry winds.

At Laaria, the area is an out and out expanse of shrubland with the Keita and Degushi hills in Isiolo town rising in the background.
