Muliro Gardens: Serene Hero’s Tribute Sanctum

The much-liked Muliro Gardens, which is the largest outdoor park in Kakamega County, not only provides pleasure and entertainment but also offers a central public area where people can connect, unbend and unwind. Declared a national monument in March, 2001, Muliro Gardens, named after Masinde Muliro, the eminent freedom fighter who hailed from this region, are also impressive for their history, as the host of some monumental political gatherings. Despite the recent scandals, Muliro Gardens provide a beautiful and peaceful urban public space to enjoy the outdoors. The garden is located nearby Makaburini in Kakamega town.

Next to being a serene sanctum, Muliro Gardens are, of course, a living tribute to Masinde Muliro, the lionized Kenyan politician, freedom fighter, and advocate for social justice and democracy. Muliro played a significant role in Kenya’s fight for independence and in shaping its political landscape post-independence. Born in 1922 in Matili, Kimilili, in present-day Bungoma County, he attended Alliance High School and later studied at Makerere University in Uganda and University of Cape Town in South Africa, specializing in Agriculture. As a politician, Muliro was one of the key premiers in the push for Kenyan independence from British colonial rule.

Masinde Muliro, a statue of whom graces the Muliro Gardens, was part of the Kenya African Union (KAU) and later became a founder member of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) in 1960. He was instrumental in fighting for the rights of marginalized communities, particularly of the Luhya. After independence, he became the MP for Kimilili and also served in various ministerial positions. Still and all, Muliro opposed the centralization of power by President Jomo Kenyatta and later under President Daniel arap Moi, advocating for multi-party democracy. He co-founded the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) in 1991.

Shrines – big and small – hold significant religious, historical, or political import and serve as symbols of identity, remembrance, and reverence. These sites also play important roles in preserving Kenya’s collective memory, fostering unity, and promoting patriotism: Places of reflection and commemoration for sacrifices and achievements made by past generations, and honored for future prosperity.
