Natural Landmarks in Isiolo Merti Plateau: The Iconic Gaar Merti Thought to be of volcanic origin, Merti Plateau, rising almost 500 feet above the surrounding country, has an altitude of 1,607 feet at the eastern end. A portion of the western end of the 20 km massive capped plateau, with its summit forming a prominent landmark, is bound by scarps rising over the peneplain country. Merti Plateau is composed of gneiss capped by lava and beds of alluvium, containing well-rounded quartz pebbles noted on its flanks. Parts of the cliffs at the eastern end is thought to resemble stacks detached from the main mass by erosion. The associated Merti Plain is sufficiently widely spaced, so that the horizon seem to never close over a flat, unbroken barren country. In spite of that, interestingly, it forms an important potential source of groundwater for the jerkwater region from Habaswein up to the Kenya-Somalia border. Nearby Merti Town, ground water of sufficient quality has been run-down and which can be acquired from aquifers pinpointed by experts within the plain using boreholes drilled to deeps of 110 ms. The unique and picturesque location of Merti town, enlivened by the iconic Merti plateau, embossed into the harsh landscape on the eastern edge of Biliqo Bulesa Conservancy, is a sight to behold. Below, the vast plain, extending 160 kms west to Habaswein, also offers a one-of-its-kind scene composed of a featureless plain of grey silt interspersed by a badland of red granitic rocks stretching as far the eye can see, giving it the illusion of an unending desert. It’s best seen along B9 Isiolo-Mandera Road from Garba Tula onto Habaswein or at the edge of Merti town.
