Caves in Elgeyo Marakwet Mela Caves: The Interlinked Wonders Located in Emsoo village near Kapchemutwa in westernmost Elgeyo Marakwet, Mela Cave, although little-known, is a unique attraction emblazoned with gigantic gypsum crystals, some of which are larger than life. ‘Mela' is a kalenjin word that means to lick, in reference to the salty salts in the surrounding area. The cave is in a beautiful setting featuring a waterfalls and wide-angles views over the country. Inside, Mela Cave is wide and at its top has stalactites that showers water all year round. Culturally, Mela Cave was used as a place for reconciliation and peace keeping by the community elders. The drawback to its popularity is that it is in the rural, back of beyond.
