Kibwezi (Mbiu Nzau) Hills: Roadside Landmark

23 km south of Makindu, before arriving at the Kibwezi turnoff, the appearance of part of the Simba-Kibwezi Hills more proper Mbiu Nzau, well known by travellers to Mombasa via both Nairobi-Mombasa Railway and the A109 Road, comes into view. Although the lightly inhabited area, marked by rock boulders outgrown with turf, has attracted little attention with miners and adventurers, it is one of the key memorable roadside landmarks near Kibwezi. These huge volcanic rocks of Mbiu Nzau at Simba-Kibwezi area are of considerable importance in relation to water supply. Most of the rain falling on the rock percolates downwards through them and flows out as sizeable springs along the northern edge to replenish streams at Simba, Kiboko, Makindu and Umani Springs. “The area is most remarkable for the presence of volcanic phenomena that can be seen mainly in its western half. Lava flows of various ages are present and numerous small volcanic cones, which in part belong to the volcanic field of the Chyulu range. A wide composition of the volcanic phenomena can be seen, including pit-craters, bombs, lava tubes and spatter cones. Over 350 volcanic vents have been traced here.” – E.P.I. Saggerson
