Matches Dam: A Dainty Hidden Gem
Hiding in plain sight just 500 ms to the side off the bustling A104 Nairobi-Nakuru Road, the little-known Matches Dam is a dainty and visually pleasing rarity. It sits in a year-round verdant belt surrounded by woodlands that host prolific monkeys, with their usual risible jungle antics, offering, despite its little recognition and amp potential, a no-frills detour to have a look-see of a well-kept surprise destination. Time allowing, it is a serene place to picnic and walk about. Arguably the largest reservoir dam in Nyandarua County, less than a kilometre north of the boundary with Kiambu County, it is situated 2 km before the Njambini Flyover at Magumu.
Often overlooked, it has been extant for over half a century. Matches Dam was constructed during the post-independent era of the late 1960s and 1970s as a part of a massive campaign to provide sufficient sources of clean water for subsistence and development in rural Kenya. Then and now, rainwater and trappings in dams is the most important source of water in the county. All in all, there are about 222 small dams, one lake (Lake Ol Bolossat), 280 boreholes, 6,244 shallow wells and 96 springs. About 22 rivers flow through the county. Of these, eight are perennial rivers; the Malewa, Ewaso Narok, Pesi, Turasha, Chania, Kiburu, Mkungi and Kitiri.

The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River.
