Manguyo Falls: A Small Pretty Horsetail

Muranga County’s compact size and good blacktop roads makes touring to its unsung destinations relatively easy. Another great advantage it holds is the fact that the A1 Nairobi-Nanyuki Road straddles a long section of its eastern boundary, with many exits to the interior, some of its most useful exit feeder roads including C70 Kabati-Kaharati Road, C70 Kangari-Kaharati Road and C71 Kabati-Muranga-Tuthu Road. The latter terminates at Kangema and Tuthu at the slopes of Aberdare Range, where the Manguyo Falls in located. A small pretty horsetail waterfall, with the water descending as it maintains some contact with the rock face behind it.

Forest wardens at Tuthu Forest Station are at hand to guide hikers to the falls, and local guides are as useful. The trail through the forest, crossed by several streams enroute, switches back from bamboo and pine patches over a rough underfoot that is ofttimes mud-caked. As you near the falls, after an hour of walking through the forest, the trail becomes steeper, crossing the valleys, scrambling over some sections, as the sound of the falls beckons. It takes on average three hours round-trip in good weather to explore Manguyo Falls. Note: Sturdy walking shoes, plenty of drinking water and snacks, and a very good watch for weather, are necessary.
