Manda Toto Island: Snorkeling Per Excellence
Lamu is all about lounging and adventure, and one of the treasured activities on a long day out sailing is snorkeling and swimming at the Manda Toto and Kinyika Reefs immediately northeast of Manda Island. A motorized boat will get there in under 2-hours from either Lamu or Shela, and for double the price and half the time a speed boat can be hired. The largest islands of Lamu archipelago are the close linked Pate, Manda and Lamu. Smaller islands include Kinyika and Kiwayu that lie within the Kiunga Marine National Reserve. Manda Toto, Faza, Kizingitini, Mtangawanda are also among many smaller islands that are only tens of meters wide. To protect one of the ace coral reefs in the archipelago, Manda Toto, buoys have been put in the snorkeling area to prevent breaking of coral. And, as it is a breeding haven, a fishing ban has been put in place using Pate and Shanga as the protectors. Across from Manda Toto, on Manda Island, sits the liked Manda Bay Resort – a revered boutique lodge located on the tip of an idyllic blissful island.
