Man-Eaters Camp: History Meets Safari

Construction of the famous Lunatic Express more proper Kenya-Uganda Railway finally reached its last railhead in December of 1901 – Kisumu. As expected, its completion upended Kenya’s domestic product exponentially, bringing in goods to the interior and raw material out. It also encouraged the settlement of British pioneers, in their thousands, to select parts of the country, especially along the line. Many Indians who had been key in its construction as labourers stayed on and soon after played a big role in the burgeoning of towns as novel shopkeepers.

The building of the line had come at a staggering cost to the empire. An estimated 5,000,000 pounds! And countless lives, from derailments, collisions, disease, tribal raids and the noted assaults of wild animals. 43 stations, 35 viaducts and 1,280 bridges were built along its course. Of all its bridges none, perhaps, is as famous as the man-eaters bridge. Man Eaters Camp offers the closest base for travellers to reignite the memories of the lunatic line exploring the iconic bridge. It has 31 camps set along the banks of Tsavo River between Tsavo East and West.

For the Nairobi or Mombasa bound travellers, the Man Eaters Camp makes for a great night’s (or two) stopover, and a surpassing base to connect two of Kenya’s great offerings – safari and beach. The amenities are of a modern design with a beautiful outdoor pool. Once relaxed and ready for adventure, there’s much to interest the visitor including game drives to either of the Tsavo Parks or to a hatful of wildlife conservancies in the area. Plenty of game including elephants, buffalos, crocodiles (along the river banks) and a motley collection of birds can be sighted.

Without too much difficulty, on a short walking trip, visitors can explore the old Man-eaters Bridge and the defunct Tsavo Station. Thankfully, all the lions in Kenya are now confined to the National Reserves, Parks and Conservancies. Even so, roaming through the dusty bushland area around camp, unpeopled for the most parts, it is not hard to imagine the terror and ordeal that filled the builders of the line. The camp is found 282 km southeast of Nairobi (207 km from Mombasa) I km to the side of the Nairobi-Mombasa Road with plenty of sign posts along the road.

It’s easy to explore somewhere new in Kenya and stay in memorable hotels and resorts with a long-standing history of excellence. Making the best of Kenya’s diverse landscapes, wildlife, beautiful coastlines and healthful highlands, these popular resort around Kenya are a guaranteed success for the traveller.
