Historic Sites along Kenya's Coast Mambrui Tombs: Ancient Chinese Heritage The most interesting of the Mambrui tombs was studied by James Kirkman in 1950. It is a big tomb with a decagonal pillar 1.6 metres wide and 5.5 metres high. In a frieze around the top of the shaft are set ten ornate late King blue and white porcelain bowls and plates, one alternating with the other, of late 16th Century. Adjoining this tomb on the north is an area with a large tombstone on its east wall and, like the enclosure of the pillar tomb, with a doorway in its west walls. Nearby is another tombstone, the most popular of Mambrui Tombs, once with a circular coral boss set in the centre of the tombstone; although the stump remains. The old Mambrui Mosque lies on some high ground above the beach, east of the site. Leading from the musalla out to the west is a single square headed doorway, while in the north end of the west wall was a niche or window. The traveller to Mambrui in the quest for ancient ruins should be aware of stumbling into the unforeseen problem of no-one knowing anything at all about any old ruins. After a fair amount of stumbling around and being shown a number of 19th century mosques, you may find what you are looking for in the main graveyard. The old Mambrui Mosque is one of the most interesting sites you can visit, as although it is fairly overgrown and collapsed, and the main tomb still had some of the original Chinese porcelain set into the pillar, and tombs from the 18th century. While the use of Chinese porcelain dishes in the stone towns along the Swahili coast has recently found much attention in art historical scholarship regarding the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, the pre-history of these dynamics in the medieval period has up to now only been considered in the field of archaeology. There are dozens of well-studied and accessible historic sites along the Kenya's Coast. Some of the historic sites located here are composed of the old settlement towns and outlying groups of tombs. North to South, the coast is awash with a collection of ruins, found mainly along the beach, many of them on private lands.
