Historic Sites in Kilifi County Malindi Pier: Seven Decades a Landmark This long salient Malindi pier, sometimes known as Buntwani, extending into the Indian Ocean, is a rustic yet beautiful iconic structures that blends architectural elegance with stunning natural surroundings. It is located 500m south of Malindi Museum, at the end of Mnarani Road. As with many piers, Buntwani offers a fine ledge to go out to sea for sightseeing and pleasurable walks out over the ocean. It is especially popular in the evenings, to watch the sunset, and over the weekend. As a cherished landmark, Malindi pier is the central point where locals meet to play soccer, swim and unwind. The 100m long Malindi pier overlooks the popular Golden beach that is also dubbed Buntwani. In a bid to woo more visitors to this community leisure area, Kilifi County Government in 2019 launched the waterfront urban renewal and recreation park, to revamp sports amenities, including: beach volleyball kits, beach soccer, and recreational facilities for the modern traveller. “The project envisions Malindi waterfront as a socio-ecological infrastructure, with the aim of answering to the environmental challenges related to climate-change and natural hazard and, at the same time, providing a tidy, interactive platform for social inclusivity, economic growth and cultural empowerment”. This move, a knock-off of the much-liked Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa, is expected to upscale and inspire more travellers to the coastal town of Malindi. Despite its reputation, known for its elegant wrought iron structure, picturesque views, historical significance, and as a landmark, the iconic Malindi pier, north of 70 years old, has huge cracks as part of its metal frames have been carted off by waylayers looking for easy money. It's hoped by all good people that the beautiful pier, which not only enhances the natural beauty of Malindi beach, but also serve as cultural and recreational hubs, attracting visitors from far and wide, will remain standing for a long time, for generations to experience its charm and allure. Kenya is home to numerous historic sites that showcase the country's rich cultural heritage, ancient civilizations, colonial history, and struggle for independence. These historic sites offer valuable insights into Kenya's past and its diverse cultural heritage, making them essential destinations for visitors interested in her history.
