National Parks & Reserves in Kilifi Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve Managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to conserve its natural resources and biodiversity, Malindi Marine National Park offers a unique opportunity to experience and appreciate Kenya's marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems, making it a popular destination for nature lovers. Dubbed the “green turtle haven”, this was the first Marine Reserve established in Kenya, in 1968. Today, Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, both for its diversity of marine life and flora and for its efforts in conservation. Access to the Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve is through Casuarina Road, south of Silversands. This is just 5 km from Malindi township taking Exit 4 (Casuarina Road) at the roundabout. Facilities within the park include the visitors center, picnic areas, and designated snorkeling areas. It's important for visitors to adhere to park regulations to minimize impact on the ever-growing fragile marine ecosystem. Visitors can arrange guided tours, boat trips, and snorkeling/diving excursions through local on-site tour operators or accommodations in Malindi. Malindi Marine National Park park is best known for its rich biodiversity and as a habitat for a wide variety of marine life, including coral species, fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and mollusks. Other prolific marine life include: crabs, corals, urchins, jellyfish, sea stars, and sea cucumbers. Coral species include Acropora, Turbinaria and Porites. Of interest here are the numerous hop-on hop-off glass-bottomed boats taxis that cruise along the shoreline and off-shore to some idyllic snorkeling spots, where the range of variegated, kooky and bizarre marine life flourish.
