Heritage Sites in Bungoma Maeni Shrine: A Bukusu Heritage Among the great heritage sites in Bungoma is Maeni Shrine, found in Kimilili. It is a mausoleum in honour of Elijah Masinde Wanameme , the great Bukusu activist, oracle and self-proclaimed hero founder of Dini ya Msambwa Sect . A familial religion of spirits, initially founded as an anti-colonialist movement, it evolved into a large sect and one of the most popular neo-traditional faiths in Western Kenya. Memorialized as the neglected freedom fighter, Elijah Masinde's legacy is complex and multifaceted, reflecting the challenges and dynamics of Kenya's struggle for independence and the subsequent efforts to address social and political issues in the post-colonial era. His influence extended beyond religious matters into the political and social spheres. And his steadfast doctrines also got in him in trouble! Elijah Masinde founded the Dini ya Musambwa movement in the early 1940s. The movement blended traditional beliefs with facets of Christianity and indigenous spirituality. It emphasized worship of ancestors and promoted resistance against colonial rule. Masinde was an outspoken critic of British colonial rule in Kenya. He openly condemned the oppression and land dispossession of the African people. His religious teachings often included messages of resistance and the need for Kenyans to reclaim their land and rights. On account of his anti-colonial activities and influence, Masinde was arrested multiple times by the colonial authorities. He spent a considerable amount of time in prison. Situated just outside the Maeni Shrine is a bunker which Elijah Masinde hid, for three years, in the 1940's, to avoid arrest by the colonial government askaris. There is also a detailed history of his later detainment, for over 15 years, that is passionately narrated by the curators. Elijah Masinde's influence extended into the post-independence period after Kenya gained independence in 1963. However, his relationship with the post-colonial government became strained. That being so, he was detained by Jomo Kenyatta's government for 15 years, accused of fomenting religious hatred. He was released by the subsequent government of Daniel Moi in 1978. However, Moi rearrested him following his clashes with traffic policemen in Webuye and Kitale. Elijah Masinde remained defiant and continually questioned the government, especially on the issue of land and rights. His calls for social justice and land reforms were not always well-received by the authorities. In 1987, Elijah Masinde was arrested again and charged with incitement. He was sentenced to a long prison term but died in custody under unclear circumstances on February 5, 1987. Elijah Masinde is remembered as a charismatic and influential leader who played a significant role in both the religious and political spheres of Kenya during a shaky period, when many dared not. His teachings continue to inspire discussions about the nexus of religion, politics, and resistance against oppression in Kenya's history. Maeni Shrine is situated in Maeni Village. From Bungoma town you head north-east via C42 Kimilili – Kamukuywa Road via Chwele for 46 km to Maeni. The alternative route via A104 through Lugulu is longer, getting you to Maeni in 54 km.
