Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy

Akin to the contiguous Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, the 125 km2 community-run Lumo Wildlife Conservancy, variant sanctuary, is also steadfast on conserving the landscape and perpetuating the wildlife resources in the wilderness area between Tsavo West National Park and Taita Hills. Its entire western boundary marches on with the Tsavo West National Park. Moreover, the area is a historically important dispersal and migratory corridor for elephants and other game. The area is rich in wildlife diversity with over 102 mammals of which 61 are large mammals. There are over 400 bird species recorded. The landscape is largely of rolling savanna.

Lumo Wildlife Conservancy was founded in 2002 primarily to encourage tourism in this wildly charming plains and support in consolidation of the Maasai ranches under a mutually beneficial partnership. Three community ranches, Lualenyi, Oza, Maramba, each set aside considerable tracks of land to form the 45,000 hectares sanctuary. The secluded and beautifully-appointed Lion’s Bluff Lodge is its anchor lodge. For the avid camper, there are; the Cheetah Campsite and Eggs Campsite. Highlights at Lumo Conservancy include: guided walks, driving safari and cultural tours to Masai villages. It is situated 51 km from Voi via the A23 Voi-Taveta Road.

Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
