Lower Kuja Irrigation and Development Scheme
Western Kenya, around Lake Victoria, has a number of irrigation schemes that play a crucial role in enhancing food security, supporting agricultural production, and complementing the thriving fishing industry. Key among them is the Lower Kuja Irrigation Irrigation Scheme, a development project located in Nyatike Sub County within the Lower Kuja River basin. It is 110 km to the south of Kisumu and 45 km north-west of Migori town. Currently, the scheme hosts 5,000 farmers.
The origin of Lower Kuja Irrigation Scheme dates back to the 1980s, following vital feasibility studies, planning and organization done by the Lake Basin Development Authority. They identified the potential for irrigation within the area, utilizing water from the Kuja and Migori Rivers. To bolster the productivity of the scheme, a latter study, carried out between 2010 and 2011, proposed a revised framework for the paddy crops and upland crops planted, to include sweet potatoes, green grams, kales, cabbages, onions, bananas, passion, Asian vegetables, and watermelons.
Presently, Lower Kuja Irrigation Scheme, covering 6 locations in Nyatike and Karungu Divisions, plays an important role in supplementing food production in the western Kenya, particularly in rice production and maize. Work in ongoing to improve its efficiency and capacity. 90% of works have been done in block A, B and C, covering nearly 2,000 acres, and 65% of work has been completed in block D, covering about 600 acres. Also of interest for visitors to the region are the much-talked about but rarely visited Macalader Gold Mines, 15 km away.
