Lamu Island: Unrepeatable Swahili Paradise

Lamu Island is a unique destination offering history, culture, and natural beauty in a tranquil setting. A culturally vibrant enclave famous for its preserved Swahili architecture, narrow car-free streets navigated by donkeys, and bucolic setting deeply connected to its maritime past and Islamic heritage. The island’s people are predominantly Muslim, and visitors are expected to dress respectfully. Lamu is committed to preserving its historical and natural assets, though it faces odds from development and the need to protect its fragile dunes and water sources.

North of Lamu and Pate Islands at Kokoni, near Kiwayu, the coast turns slightly west, in a manner suggesting that a fault in the coral ridge may have generated a partial collapse, triggering the combination of sea water and shallow beds of soil to create good conditions for the growth of mangroves. It is within this area that the main islands of the archipelago, Lamu, Manda and Pate, are found. Lamu has a fine natural harbor that’s fringed along the west, north and northeast by mangrove forests. Few crops can be cultivated on the sandy soil, but there are shambas or farmed grounds west of the town where mangoes and coconuts are cultivated.

Lamu town, in the north-east quarter of Lamu Island, is sited some little distance up a creek, at the entrance to which is the little village of Shela with ample relics of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese architecture. For all the bonanza of get-at-able infographics portraying this townscape from sea, the first impression of Lamu, from either side you approach it from, is always memorable. The first thing that strikes the first-time traveller on approaching Lamu are the tall stone houses, built of coral rock, and constructed after the Arab fashion round an open courtyard.

Many of these houses, on a closer inspection at the town, have beautiful doors, ornately carved and adorned with brass or iron knobs. The streets, not noticeable from the sea view, are narrow, only sufficiently wide to allow a loaded donkey or two men abreast to pass at the same time. The narrowness of the streets only serves to emphasize the height of the houses, so that as one walks along they appear to be nothing less than high-rises. The folk of the island call it Amu, and from this the name of one of three major Ki-Swahili dialects, Ki-Amu, is derived.

Its usual place name, Lamu, may be a corruption of Al-Amu, the prefix being the definite article in Arabic. The community of Lamu has embraced the value of its history and the importance of traditions and customs. The values, beliefs and way of life throughout the island are the essence of its culture which grew with the spread-eagle stone town at the heart of Lamu Archipelago. The Lamu experience on a whole is charming and picturesque. Opposite Lamu is the island of Manda.
