Lake Simbi Nyaima

Lakes in Homa Bay Lake Simbi Nyaima: The Village That Sunk 2 km from Kendu Bay town en-route Homa Bay the turnoff to Lake Simbi Nyaima is reached. This is a must see attraction in Homa Bay County. Entry is free, and it is conveniently sited just off the road. Answering to the sobriquet of "the village that sank", the miniature Lake Simbi Nyaima, measuring only 1 km in diameter during the dryer months of the year, geologically occupies a modest caldera depression resulting from volcanic activity. The lake's overall rendering is scenically-pleasant. The lay of the land is generally flat, sloping only slightly towards the shoreline of Lake Victoria, a few kilometers north. To the far-west are the spectacular Homa Hills, which may have been formed by the same geological processes that sprung it. Its small size makes it perfect to walk around. On top of that is the wacky origin tale that thrust it into the limelight. It is an important local cultural construct, because it accounts for both its origin and the importance for its conservation. The tale of its origin goes like this: "A certain ugly-looking woman with skin conditions visited the local area looking for someone to take her in and give her food and rest. However, nobody accepted to host her but instead the people chased her away. Wild, angry and desperate, the woman unleashed her anger and ordered the entire village to sink, along with all its houses, leading to the origin of the lake. All the people in the village perished as she went on her way". While the traveller may not be convinced by the old wives tales, its branding value for eco-tourism is agreeably appropriate and, as the locals agree, tramples numerous scientific explanations. Despite its peaceful outlook, the water in Lake Simbi Nyaima is very saline and sulphurous. And during the months when the African sun is raging, it emits a fetid smell which, remarkably, ushers in its biggest attraction. It is a swarming transit refuge for migrating lesser flamingos from the Rift Valley lakes. Ondago Swamp Sanctuary is situated 700 ms from Lake Simbi. Kenya is blessed with several lakes, each offering unique attractions, ecosystems, and opportunities for exploration. Shared with Uganda and Tanzania, Lake Victoria is the largest tropical lake in the world by surface area. Known for its geysers and hot springs, Lake Bogoria is among the unique lakes along Kenya's Rift Valley. All these lakes not only provide scenic beauty but also support diverse ecosystems.
