Lake Kiboko: A Little-Known Seasonal Lake
Seasonal and obscure among the catalog of lakes in Kenya is the little-known Lake Kiboko, sometimes known as Kiboko Dam owing to its rather small size. The origins of Lake Kiboko is a dry-hole well drilled in the offshore Lamu Basin, and also a reference to “Kiboko” as a location of several villages in the area. Lake Kiboko, or Ziwa La Kiboko, is situated nearby to the locality Mlima Wa Faru, as well as near Mwitu Wa Mwalimu. Well Kiboko 1 was a dry-hole drilled to 6907 m of the Late Jurassic by Anadarko Kenya Company. That there have been climate changes in rainfall patterns, more frequent storm surges, longer lasting heat waves, and an increase in soil erosion inland in Kenya need no introduction. These changes have led to an decrease of water levels at Lake Kiboko, to near extinction.
Kenya is blessed with several lakes, each offering unique attractions, ecosystems, and opportunities for exploration. Shared with Uganda and Tanzania, Lake Victoria is the largest tropical lake in the world by surface area. Known for its geysers and hot springs, Lake Bogoria is among the unique lakes along Kenya’s Rift Valley. All these lakes not only provide scenic beauty but also support diverse ecosystems.
