Kopere Rocks Heritage & Science Park

12km from Chemilil along the C37 Chemilil-Kopere-Songhor Road, about 1.5 km before reaching Kopere–Songhor junction, is an unusual attraction, easy to miss, but staring the intrepid explorer in the face as it towers along the shoulder of the road. Also cited as Mawe ya Mungu, this peculiar stack of rock columns, piled up a hillock, as if someone chiselled them, piled them up and forgot about them, is a striking natural rock formations that draws interest for their unusual shapes and cultural stories. Rather obscure, Kopere rock formations are geologically striking.

Likely shaped by natural weathering and erosion over eons, the origin and likely purpose of Kopere Rocks still baffles locals, and visitors alike. So much so, when the Chemelil-Kopere-Songhor road was being cleared for construction in the 1950s, the surveyors found these rocks and left them unharmed. These rocks are more proper basalt columns or formation. The primary rocks include Nyanzian groups of rocks, invaded by regional batholiths, diorites, and giant quartz veins. These are masked in places by Pleistocene deposits that include soils and laterite.

As a Heritage and Science Park, Kopere Rocks are presented as a place where visitors can learn about local geology, cultural stories, and possibly natural history connected to the rock formations and landscape. Still and all, these rocks lie in a picturesque setting. Kopere, below the Nyando Escarpment, is located in one of three sugar belts in Kenya. Road conditions are pleasant for a brisky drive. And, traffic density is low, about 1,520 vehicles per day. The wider area around Kopere and Songhor also includes prehistoric sites where early fossils and paleontological remains have been studied, reflecting deep natural history in the Kopere region.
