Historic Churches in Migori

Komotobo Mission Church: Maranatha Faith

Historic Churches in Kenya are often known for their striking designs, rich history, unique beliefs, and deep cultural significance in local communities. Many of these churches reflect local architectural styles, natural surroundings, and the beliefs of the people who built them. Above Chinato Mawe Mawili rock formation landmark in the eastern region of Kuria, Nyabasi, is where Komotobo is found, at hand with the Tanzanian border and Masai Mara. Komotobo Mission Church is noteworthy because it was the first of its kind in Kenya under the Maranatha Faith Assemblies.

Maranatha Faith Assemblies (MFA), first known as Maranatha Mission, was started at Komotobo in 1967 by the Swedish missionary Bengt Sundh. His mission was to reach the isolated rural folk with the modern gospel and to improve their social welfare, status, and future prospects of the poor and needy. When Bengt arrived, Komotobo was a remote, undeveloped backcountry, yet, to him, it was a serene place for bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to Kuria. He also wanted to bring help to needy people in the area. In 1970 Curt Johansson joined him at Komotobo, and two years later he succeeded Bengt as the new director of Maranatha Mission.

Full of eagerness and energy, joined by a team of Kenyan converts, knowing well what duty, and goals, lie ahead of them, they embarked, in 1971, on building what became the beginning of today’s Komotobo Mission Church. Later, in 1988,   the headquarter was moved from Komotobo to Migori because of need of electricity and better access to the main road. Since this humble beginning, MFA has grown to become a big church organization in Kenya, with about 700 churches across the country. Through these churches MFA runs schools and family care programs. Komotobo Mission is still among their major working station, followed by Migori.

Over the years, many Swedish missionaries have lived at Komotobo, and been in charge of the different working areas. In recent times, the mission has mainly been directed and developed by local leaders. Komotobo is a mission station with many different areas of work, with most of them focus on children. It is situated in the southwest of Kenya, deep down in the green and well cultivated Kuria area.

Komotobo Mission possesses a goodly compound of around 18 acres, where most of the work takes place, although some areas of work are also situated outside the property. The locals are involved with the daily work, as employees and volunteers. Komotobo Mission is founded on Christian faith and this affects the daily work in the whole compound. For example, it is natural for the children to say grace before eating and also the schools have morning prayer every day and Bible teaching one morning a week. All employees in Komotobo Mission share the Christian belief and three mornings a week they gather for devotion.

You don’t have to be religious, or even spiritual, to enjoy a beautiful old church. The architecture, the stained glass, the history, and the famous graves all make visiting historic churches a fulfilling activity on any trip. Kenya has a lot of very old and lovely churches, and you can enter most of them free of charge, at any time.
