Komarock Shrine: Of Mindful Affection

Approaching Tala town, a rocky outcrop that was but a speck earlier on comes to view. This is the famous Komarock, considered a shrine by many. The hill, as the say, is a sacred place. The center of interest here is the 70 feet tall concrete statue at the summit. Fabricated in 2000, the statue depicting Jesus Christ in the arms of his mother Mary after the body was lowered from the cross, turned this otherwise abandoned run-of the mill hill into a liked interdenominational place of prayer and reflection. There’s no fence, guardrails or blockades, giving access to all and many. Then, yearly, on the first Sunday of February, thousands of Christians from all over Kenya congregate at the Komarock Shrine for the annual prayer pilgrimage, which includes a 3 km walk from the base to summit, where the enormous statue stands sentinel. The ascend reenacts ‘way of the cross’, that devotion in Christianity that recalls with mindful affection the last stage of the journey which Jesus walked in his earthly life’. Komarock Shrine is sited 63 km from Nairobi via Kangundo Road.
