Kisima Farm: Painting A Landscape

Agriculture is the foundation of Meru’s blooming economy, with a mingle of small farms, and larger farms nearby Timau in Buuri Sub-county. For years many now the large farms flanking the A2 Road have composed lovely landscapes. Alas! still a pleasure for repeat motorists along A2 Road between Nanyuki and the turnoff to Meru town, each season of the year painting a novel reposeful panorama. Known for their matching landscapes, agrarian innovation, and serene environment, the three largest farms at Timau, specializing mainly in horticulture and dairy farming, are Kisima, Marania, and Ol Donyo Farms collectively covering almost 10000 ha.

Kisima Farm, a working ranch of about 6000 ha, originally specialized in breeding Merino sheep and cereal farming, mainly of wheat, maize and barley, while it was expanding production to certified potatoes, horticulture and floriculture. Founded in 1919, then incorporated in 1943, it is 100% Kenyan owned and operated. By the 1960s, approximately 50 percent of Kisima Farm’s land was under avant-garde cultivation. Diversification continued after the farm was put under professional management in 1979, and the farm continues to specialize in cereals. Well worth a visit, today Kisima Farm is splendid, highly productive, and a mixed working farm.

Kisima also manages a successful forestry programme and supports numerous thriving community development projects. It operates a substantial corporate social responsibility, assisting nearby communities with education, healthcare, water projects, agricultural extension and environmental sustainability. Akin to many farms around Timau that take in guests, Kisima has an open door policy provided advance notice. Indeed the experience in these farms in singular and exciting, and most also provides lodging facilities. There is a farm shop at Kisima.

Taking cognizance that Kenya is primarily agrarian, farm tours are a fantastic way to learn about the backbone of its economy, connect with nature, and gain insight into the operations of working farms.
