Kisere Forest Reserve: An Outlying Patch
Although it’s presupposed that the Kakamega Forest Ecosystem has shrunk by a reasonable extent, it is also unlikely that the main forest block was ever linked to the outlying forests of Kisere, Bunyala, Malava, and North Nandi. Surprisingly, the detached 471-hectares Kisere Forest Reserve, situated about 21 km northeast of Kakamega township, and just 5 kms east of Kakamega National Reserve, has been growing and expanding its reaches since the early part of the 20th century. It was gazetted at the same time as the Kakamega Forest Reserve and also falls under the management of Kenya Wildlife Service. Kisere Forest is comprised of mixed hard wood forest with a wide range of animal species. The De Brazza’s monkey is also limited to this forest. Other attractions include its birds and the high canopy trees.
Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
