Nature Parks in Nandi

Kiplolok Carbon Dioxide Springs

Kiplolok Springs, oft-times cataloged Kiplolok Carbon Dioxide Springs, are found at Kiplolok village in Songoliet Location. Still underdeveloped for touring and for recreation, these springs sit in community land thought to have been owned in the days of yore by the indomitable Maasai tribe. In their south-north conquest of pre-colonial Kenya, they fought, as is they way with warriors, for a longer period with the Nandi people, following land disputes including these springs. Similar to Ngabunat Caves, Kipkolok Springs are a living-museum of the riveting chronicle.

Moreover, during the rainy season, the Kiplolok Springs, hewing with multiple bubbling wells, gains seasonal pools, whose saline pool alters colour from an azure blue to emerald green as water recedes and fills up with the season. These pools, an avid photographer’s land of clicks, are still historic communal pool, the saline lime water still being used for salt brine and to nourish livestock. Once run by Maasai in the bygone days, these pools are now communally owned. Still, the cool carbonated water from the natural springs is of most interest to the visitor.

The demand for carbonated water in Kenya, just like the rest of the world, is on the rise. The dissolved CO2 concentration of the water ranged from 1.20 g/L to 2.65 g/L during the rainy season and 1.50 g/L to 3.00 g/L in the dry season for all sampling points, conforming to the KEBS standards for carbonated water of at least 1 g/L but P5 recorded CO2 values of 0.5 and 0.4 g/L for rainy and dry season respectively. However, purification and treatment is still necessary to lower the turbidity of the water, eliminate the microbial contaminants and adjust pH to at least 4, to conform to the KEBS recommendation for naturally carbonated water.

Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.
