Industries in Kilifi County Kilifi Sisal Plantations: An Old Roadside Charmer For many decades now, the 48 km stretch of B8 Mombasa-Malindi Road between Vipingo and Kilifi has been known with motorists for its acres upon acres of the neat and tidy sisal farms – a visibly dark hued green hardy, drought-resistant succulent that grows well in the arid regions of Kenya. Although the area between Vipingo and Takaugu is slowly changing, thanks to modern residential estates, the stretch from Takaungu to Kilifi still retains its old world charm of unbroken rows and columns of the nondescript cactus-like plant, interspersed by giant baobabs. Traditionally harvested to make twine and ropes, the uses of sisal at Kilifi Sisal Plantations has expanded and these versatile fibers are being integrated into textiles, used in housing materials and replacing fiberglass in the auto industry. But the future looks grim! The transformation at Vipingo started after Centum, through Vipingo Development, bought 10,254 acres of land for redevelopment into modern residential estates. The construction of a mega 10,000 square feet shopping mall, a food processing factory, and warehouse plant are in progress. Rea Vipingo operates Vipingo Sisal Estate, 30 km north of Mombasa, with an output capacity of 4,500 tonnes. They also own the Dwa Estate in Kibwezi some 200 km southeast of Nairobi with a land area of 8,990 ha and an annual fibre production of about 7,000 tonnes. North of Takaungu to Kilifi bridge lies the Kilifi Sisal Plantations which grows sisal alongside dairy farming and agronomy. For over 40 years, it was a monocrop sisal farm before combining dairy farming. Today, the vast 2,500 ha Kilifi Sisal Plantations property is also a working dairy farm. It is among the biggest employers in the area, with an upwardly mobile community of 300 farm employees, 100 households, and 7 schools. There are a number of tracks and pathways crisscrossing the plantations which are great to walk, run or even bike. Mbuyuni in Kilifi Plantations is a small secure compound of four classic designed cottages. Each of the Cape Dutch style cottages sits on a half acre close to Indian Ocean, Takaungu Creek, and Kivukoni International School.
