Kibarani Recreation Park: From Rugs to Riches

From a fetid dumpsite to a paragon public park, Kibarani Recreation Park, north of Makupa causeway, was a momentous conversion. Its landfill goes back to at least 1950, and over the next many decades about 90% of Mombasa island waste was openly dumped and burnt here, piled high to many hillocks. But it was the locale of Kibarani near Makupa causeway, linking Mombasa to Nairobi along A109 Road and to Moi International Airport and Rail way station, as well as its proximity to key state agencies like Kenya Pipeline, which, at the last, merited its detestation, nauseating stench and Alps of rotting garbage risking a smear of Mombasa’s fame.

The process of creating the Kibarani Park was no easy fit! To begin with, it took the involvement of a Mombasa capitalist, Asuu, and the goodwill of the National and Local Governments to correct what may have been a longstanding environmental injustice to the surrounding residents and visitors to Mombasa – one of Kenya’s ace destination. From 2017, for three long years, working round the clock, crews bulldozed tons garbage in the 20-acres site. While a capped landfill may not have necessarily been park director’s first choice for a parcel of land, the cleared area made way for 500,000 trees to be planted, turning the eyesore into a lovely sight.

Presently, Ashok, palm, Jacaranda, Bougainvillea, coconut, sisal and Casuarina trees have slowly taken root, and the putrid landfill gases, created when buried waste decomposes, it a nightmare of the past. The flocks of Indian house crows that thrived on rotting garbage have moved on giving way to other bird species. Families and pigs that scavenged in the mountains of solid waste have also moved away. Live ostriches are now attracting crowds. The drive past Kibarani Park, on the side of A109 Road, lined with a conglomerate of national flags, is memorable.
