Hiking Trails in Machakos
Kanzalu (Hills) Range: Thui Stone Viewpoint
The chain of highlands formed by Kanzalu, Kangundo and Machakos Hills, and Ol Doinyo Sabuk in the distance north, are a major watershed. Their deflecting action is illustrated by the River Athi which flows east-south-east from its source to Athi River Town, then north-east before turning to flow in a south-east direction round the north end of Kilimambogo. Known for its undulating aspect and lush outlook, Kanzalu Range, sometimes known as Kanzalu Hills, is famed for producing high quality, single-origin coffee beans. The unique microclimate and rainfall patterns contribute to the beans’ rich flavor. Kanzalu Range experiences distinct seasons, with gentle showers during the rainy season; sunny days and cool nights during the dry season, influencing the coffee quality. Year long the range also provides a visually appealing viewpoint to the Yatta Plateau, making it a popular destination.

Part of the larger Ukambani alongside Kitui and Makueni, Machakos County is a nexus between Maasailand, the coast region, the central highlands, and Nairobi. The northern area of Machakos, being a dormitory zone for the capital of Nairobi and a peri-urban buffer for Kiambu, is developed with useful amenities. Southerly heading the ecology is continually semi-arid and the countryside more desolate.
