Makueni Fruit Processing Plant – Kalamba
In the face of its ecological shortcomings, Makueni County is among the largest producers of fruits in Kenya, most notably mangoes. Governor Kivutha Kibwana decided to engender this processing plant after realizing that many of the 12,000 mango farmers in his county were struggling to sustain a decent living because of the lack of access to local markets. Kalamba Fruit Factory, situated at Kilili Nzaui, now has the potential harness the resource and further enrich the livelihood of farmers. This progressive project hopes to tap an annual production of 20,000 metric tonnes of mangoes, 20,000 metric tonnes of citrus, 1,500 metric tonnes of avocado and 5,000 metric tonnes of bananas – all valued at a noteworthy Kes. 20 Billion. Kalamba Fruit Factory currently produces only pulp, with plans to install juice-making plants to add more value to its produce, and a water bottling plant.
