Rock Art Sites in Busia Kakapel Rock: Otherworldly Appearance Not to be missed on a trip to Busia County is Kakapel Rock, without doubt one of its most striking landmarks. It is a large igneous intrusion, of vertically jointed columns of igneous rock that rise dramatically over the surrounding landscape. Renowned for its distinctive appearance, the tall, angular and slender columns form a mega skew-whiff tower-like structure, over 200 feet in height, giving it an otherworldly appearance. It was designated as a national monument in 2004. Kakapel Rock is the tallest monolithic rock formations in Busia and, by the same token, holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for several native tribes, including the Luhya and Iteso. Centuries old rock art near Kakapel Rock point to the fact that it was considered a sacred site and is associated with prehistoric ceremonies, legends, and traditions. Overall, it is a remarkable natural landmark with geological, cultural, and recreational significance, drawing visitors from around the country to marvel at its beauty and explore its unique features. Sited at the foothills of Mt. Elgon near the Kenya-Uganda border, Kakapel Rock and the surrounding region was the perfect place to begin searching for the earliest farmers in eastern Africa. It is cited that the first fluorescence of farming in the region was associated with the “Urewe” culture. Urewe pottery is directed with linear incised and paneled motifs, and it also appears along with evidence for iron production and use, and the earliest domesticated crops in the region. The Urewe phenomenon is thought to mark the arrival of the Bantu speaking populations from western Africa into the region. These pioneering farmers brought some crops (like pearl millet) with them from western Africa, however when they reached the Great Lakes region of eastern Africa around 2500 years ago they came into contact with other domesticated plants like sorghum and finger millet. They would have also encountered new peoples too, particularly the “Kansyore” anglers and the diverse mobile herders living around Lake Victoria. Kenya is rich in rock art sites that offer a glimpse into the ancient cultures and artistic expressions of its early inhabitants. Most of these site features rock paintings believed to be several hundred years old, depicting human figures and animals. These rock arts sites, and unique as they are diverse, provide valuable insights into the cultural, religious, and social practices of early societies.
