Isiukhu Falls: A Pleasant Walkers Destination
The dendritic drainage pattern of Kakamega Forest Ecosystem forms part of the Lake Victoria Basin. It has a good system of rivers or rivulets running from the northeast to southwest, the most notable of these being Rivers Nzoia and Yala. River Nandamanywa drains into Isiukhu River, which subsequently drains into Nzoia River, having crisscrossed the forest for the entire length. River Nzoia, the primary drainage recipient of these rivers, eventually drains into Lake Victoria.
Within the nature-lovers santum of Kakamega Forest Reserve, Isiukhu River hosts and offers beautiful view points for birds, antelopes, monkeys, freshwater crabs, natural glades, secondary vegetation, old secondary forests and the Isiukhu falls. The Yala River is in the south eastern end of the forest and has a spectacular 20m high waterfall. The trail towards the river and falls offers visitors the opportunity to view typical primary and secondary forest. The journey to Isiukhu Falls involves trekking through well-maintained forest trails, making it a liked activity for visitors.
Isiukhu falls is easy on the eye. The falls cascade over rocks into a serene pool below, surrounded by tall trees, dense vegetation, and moss-covered rocks. The peaceful ambiance is only interrupted by the sound of rushing water and chirping birds. The clearing around the falls is ideal for birdwatching, with species like the Great Blue Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, and various forest-dwelling birds often spotted nearby. The falls attract vibrant butterflies and other insects, adding to its allure.
As is the way with the seasons in Kenya, Isiukhu falls is most spectacular during or shortly after the rainy seasons (April-May and October-November), when water levels are profuse and higher. However, at this time, the trails may be slippery, so proper footwear is essential. Dry seasons (January-March and June-September) offer easier hiking conditions and better wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike to the falls takes around 1-2 hours, depending on the starting point and pace. Guides are available to lead you to the falls and explain the forest’s keys and biodiversity.
