Isecheno Nature Reserve: Kakamega Ecosystem
Isecheno Nature Reserve lies within Kakamega Forest Ecosystem, in the middle area. It covers about 138 hectares, while its opposite-number Yala River Nature Reserve, in the southern area, occupies 538 hectares. Isecheno Nature Reserve is a beautiful place, marked by natural forest with low historical disturbance and access difficulty. It not only forms a good representation of local forest types, but is very ideal for research work as well as a safe refuge for species undisturbed by anthropogenic activity. Isecheno Blue Shouldered Guesthouse is found at hand.
Isecheno Nature Reserve contains picturesque forest glades, the most prominent of these, Kalunya glade, being marked by numerous shallow pits and riverine forests. It has a canopy lookout tower, reachable on a easy walking tours, which offers visitors wide view of the upper forest canopy. It is also a useful birding hideout, and with some luck to spot its two endemic bird species – the African Grey Parrot and the Black-billed Turaco. Isecheno-Ikuywa Road that runs through the forest to Isecheno Gate, providing an ideal access and lovely roadside views.
