Kenya’s Path to Modern Christianity

Historic Churches in Kenya: A Complete Guide

You don’t have to be religious, or even spiritual, to enjoy a beautiful old church. The architecture, the stained glass, the history, and the famous founders all make visiting historic churches fulfilling. Around Kenya are a hatful of iconic and historic churches, and you can enter most of them free of charge, at any time. Sometimes there are guides ready to take you through them, and sometimes you’ll find you’re wandering at your own pace, the only person in the building. Whether it’s a grand cathedral or a quiet country chapel, Kenya has some fascinating churches to visit.

Native shrines, common in many communities around Kenya, were an integral part of the Kenyan landscape since well before the colonial conquest. They stood revered for millennia as a visible sign of a higher presence in each community. As the centuries came and went, these hallowed shrines were used for prayers and sacrifices, performed within strict rules and beautified by utter reverence from the leaders and community. With time, as the western wave of modern Christianity swept through, pastors, craftspeople and artists, marking life’s most important moments within them to bring Chritianity to the native, began a new movement.

Christianity in Kenya has a rich and layered history, stretching back to the mid-19th century when European missionaries first arrived. Over time, Christianity has become the dominant religion in Kenya, with a significant impact on the country’s culture, education, and politics. Today, the Christian church remains an influential force in Kenya, shaping social issues, contributing to community development, and playing a role in political advocacy. It should not, however, be overlooked that the foremost Christians to visit East Africa were Vasco da Gama and his crew, including Roman Catholic missionaries, in 1498. But their interest was economic, not imperial, and hardly did they ever visit the hinterlands away from the Coast.

The first notable Christian influence in Kenya on the latter and lasting influence came with the Church Missionary Society (CMS) from England, which sent missionaries to East Africa in the 1840s. Johann Ludwig Krapf and Johannes Rebmann were among the earliest missionaries, arriving in Mombasa in 1844. They primarily aimed to spread the gospel, open schools, and fight the slave trade. While initial efforts focused on the coastal communities, missionaries gradually moved inland, especially after the establishment of British colonial rule. Mission stations, schools, and health centers became key tools for spreading Christianity.

By the early 20th century, other denominations joined, including the Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist missions. The missionaries often provided medical services, education, and economic development, which drew converts. Christianity’s spread in Kenya was closely linked with British colonialism. The colonial government often supported missionary activities to help “civilize” the African population according to Western ideals. However, this alliance sometimes created rows, as missions oft-times conflicted with local traditions and customs.

Still and all, as Christianity spread across the county, some native Christians sought more autonomy and culturally relevant expressions of faith. These desires gave rise to African Independent Churches (AICs), such as the African Inland Church (AIC) and the Legio Maria Church. AICs combined Christianity with African customs and beliefs, appealing, regionally, to those who wanted to maintain a sense of cultural identity. This movement grew as African Christians became dissatisfied with European-dominated churches and their restrictive practices.

You don’t have to be religious, or even spiritual, to enjoy a beautiful old church. The architecture, the stained glass, the history, and the famous graves all make visiting historic churches a fulfilling activity on any trip. Kenya has a lot of very old and lovely churches, and you can enter most of them free of charge, at any time.
