Haller Park Mombasa: Surprisingly Pleasant

Found near Bombolulu at the corner of Nyali-Links and Nyali-Malindi Roads, 9 km north of Nyali Bridge, is Rene Haller’s remarkable achievement in the rehabilitation of the old Bamburi cement quarries. Haller was hired as a manager of the garden department at Bamburi in 1950 and given the task to beautify the area. In the early 1970s he embarked on the restoration project. His conception was a masterpiece. Up until now, Haller Park is a rare success of land reclamation in Kenya, yet, it is also much prized for its scenery and a place to begin or renew your romance with nature. Haller Park is, without doubt, the most popular nature park in North Coast, receiving over 160,000 visitors each year. Plenty of game can be sighted; hippos, giraffes, buffalos and antelopes as well as smaller mammals like vervet monkeys.

Presently, there’s nothing that gives away its former tumbledown wasteland, even for the most skeptic of travellers. In instead, Haller Park Mombasa has a thriving game sanctuary, reptile park, small demonstration fish farm area, a palm garden, crocodile pens and a giraffe viewing platform, offering a variety of attractions in one place. The diversity of flora is also considerable; from mangrove palms, native shade trees, coastal forests, several of these noted as rare. This is haven for the nature-lover. Each plant plays a key role in the overall harmony of the ecosystem. The park is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Entry charges in Kes: Resident Adult 500, Child 200; Non Resident Adult 1400, Child 600, but well worth the fee in a surprisingly pleasant destination well worth that lovely afternoon’s walking.

Mombasa Butterfly Pavilion, an extension of Haller Park, is best known for its 4 km fitness trail. It is salutary to mention that Butterfly Pavilion was also a part of the reclamation and rehabilitation project done by Bamburi Cement Company. Still, experiences at Butterfly Pavilion and Haller Park are different, but there’s the sure joy of walking in nature at both nature parks. The main emphasis at the pavillion is to offer a calming afternoon’s walk for people of all ages. As such, it is designed as a Vitaparcours fitness trail with various fitness stations, each with an engagnging and illustrative step-by-step panel displaying varying exercises. Vitaparcours was begun in 1968 by Zurich in Switzerland to offer a simple fitness regimen available for everyone, anytime and free of charge. There are over 25 species of butterflies to be spotted along the trail. You can also opt to jog or ride around the pavillion.

Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.
