Natural Landmarks in Homa Bay Gwassi Hills: An Iconic Natural Landmark Rising abruptly from Winam Gulf to 7,454 feet, the dissected massif of the Gwasi Hills, partially forested, covers 1,048 km2 at the northwest corner of Homa Bay County, south of Mfangano Island. Only along the upper reaches and hilltops of the steep-sloped Gwassi Hills do the deciduous seasonal forests occur, and much of the lower regions are outgrown with thickets and savanna type vegetation which eventually merges with Lambwe Valley immediately south and south east. The outer extent of the Gwassi Hills are marked by steep, gullied stack ridges of volcanic rocks called Kisingiri with high points at Gembe (6,230 feet), Sumba (6,034 feet), Gwassi (6,384 feet) and Usengere, also known as Kwirathia (7,454 feet). The Gwasi's form a magnificent backdrop at Mfangano, Rusinga, Takawiri islands, and at the Ruma National Park that sits east of these hills. Locally known as the Usengere Hills, meaning ‘the revered and sacred shrine', the steep-sloped Gwassi Hills are endowed with a pleasant diversity of both biota and scenery. The Gwasi massif, which forms the western valley wall, is a dormant volcano. The Roo Valley gives access between the Gwassi and Gembe Hills to the coastal plains of Winam Bay. The floor of the Lambwe Valley slopes gently from an altitude of 1 280 m to 1 190 m at the shore of the Kavirondo Gulf. The Gwassi Hills form part of the scenic trinity of hill in this region, alongside Ruri and Gembe hills. In its broad northern end it contains the North and South Ruri hills, which rise to 1 615 m and 1 700 m, respectively. Ruri hills are surrounded by conical volcanic plugs of lava.
