National Shrines in Kericho

Gurdwara Guru Nanak: A Living Monument

Completed in 2000, and where its founder GNNSJ, Sant Baba Puran Singh ji had his residence and workshop between 1927 and 1974, the voluminous Gurdwara Sahib complex is one of the largest Gurdwara establishment in Africa. Officially known as the ‘Gurdwara Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha’ with its twin 100 ft high domes visible from most parts of Kericho, this was gazetted as a “A Place of Spiritual Significance” in 1998. In the truest sense of the idiom, a Gurdwara is the place where Sikhs come together for congregational worship. The first Gurdwara in the world was built by Guru Nanak in 1521-2 at Kartarpur. There are about 200 Gurdwaras in Britain. The literal meaning of the Punjabi word Gurdwara is ‘the residence of the Guru’, or ‘the door that leads to the Guru. The brightly coloured Gurdwara Sahib has also been dedicated to the memory of its founder, who was also affectionately known as ‘Kericho wala Bajaji’. It is found off Kenyatta Road, 1 km off B1 Kericho-Kisumu Road, making the turnoff across from Kericho Golf Club.

Shrines – big and small – hold significant religious, historical, or political import and serve as symbols of identity, remembrance, and reverence. These sites also play important roles in preserving Kenya’s collective memory, fostering unity, and promoting patriotism: Places of reflection and commemoration for sacrifices and achievements made by past generations, and honored for future prosperity.

Kericho County is famous for its vast tea plantations. It is all around a tea-riffic countryside clutching traditions and culture with one hand and a forward-looking yen on the other. It is home to large forests, historic sites and resorts, too.
