Gotu Cultural Centre
Cultural Centres in Isiolo Gotu Cultural Centre, Camp Simpirre Gotu Cultural Centre is dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and celebration of the cultures, heritage, and traditions of the communities of the North. It was an initiative by Kivulini Trust that nurtures young people to be the future leaders and custodians of their natural and cultural heritage as a medium to promote adaptive socio-cultural transformation. Isiolo County is culturally diverse. It is, of course, most popular as the ancestral homeland of the Somali and Borana communities, mingled with a hatful mix of the Turkana, Samburu, Gabra, Garre and Meru tribes. Through documentation and publishing culture and indigenous knowledge, Gotu Cultural Center aims to foster information knowledge banks from where current and future generations can retrieve their ancestral indigenous knowledge that, if necessary, will help them go back in their communities’ historical timeline and recreate their diminished or lost languages and cultural practices documented and archived in print and electronic formats. Today, the centers serve as hubs for cultural activities and community engagement, providing a place where people can gather to learn about and participate in the cultures of various communities. As the world looks to the west for inspiration, and the influences continue to ever permeate every fabric of society, cultural centers like this will, inevitably, play a crucial role in preserving endangered languages, traditions, and customs. Gotu Cultural Centre is situated about 52 km from Isiolo town. From the main business district, you turn right at Isiolo-Moyale Junction onto the B9 Isiolo-Mandera Road for 33 km to Ndumuru Center, then turn left onto Simbirre Road for 19 km. A trip to Gotu Cultural Centre should be planned for good weather, avoid the rain season, because the road in unpaved and maybe difficult for some to navigate through.
