Legend and Heroes in Tana River Fumo Liyongo: The Legendary Poet and Hero One of the famous ancient legends along the Swahili coast is that of the poet and hero Fumo Liyongo. He is believed to have lived anywhere from the 14th to 17th century, although the exact dates of his existence are uncertain. Also known as Mwana wa Mwana, he remains to this day a legendary figure in the folklore of the Mijikenda, most revered as a leader and symbol of resistance against oppression. While historians don't agree on the exact time of his existence, they agree on the correlated oral traditions of his great leadership. Anecdotes about the warrior-poet have been part of oral traditions for centuries. The life and exploits of Fumo Liyongo have been the subject of legends passed down through generations. All celebrate his bravery, wisdom, leadership, and his role in defending his people. This is to also say that the story of Fumo Liyongo is as lengthy as it has various versions. It has been recounted in many Swahili pieces of poetry and metrical compositions. The following is a reduced version of events, which should serve only as an appetizer to know and learn more about this unsung, enduring legend. Fumo Liyongo's ascent to the realms of a venerable poet was his popularization of the Swahili spiel “Utenzi wa Liyongo”, using lyrics for gungu dance. This epic was later recorded in Arabic scripts circa 1880 by Muhammad Bin Bakari. Muhammad Kijuma, an equally venerated Swahili poet, known as the Socrates of Lamu, also wrote the ninth poem from The Epic of Liyongo, in 1913. And since, many poems and songs of the hero, who had to fight for the throne of Pate, have been curated. As a legend Fumo Liyongo’s narrative has been used as a stencil to narrate coastal resistance against oppression or African empowerment. The variation of detail in the main legend notwithstanding, the gist of the story is an account of how Fumo Liyongo struggled with Daudi Mringwari, the Sultan of Pate, who was Liyongo’s maternal cousin. Mringwari viewed Fumo Liyongo as a potential usurper to his throne, while Liyongo was convinced that he was the rightful heir to the kingdom. Thus the succession of the throne of Pate Sultanate forms the core of the story. Mringwari makes several attempts to get rid of Fumo Liyongo. First Mringwari arranges a marriage between Liyongo and an attractive Galla woman, hoping to keep the bard in Galla county far from Pate. The Galla, sometimes known as the Orma, arrived in Tana River region, their stronghold in Kenya, during or before the 16th century, migrating south from Dirre region in Ethiopia. After Fumo settles down with his Galla wife, Mringwari offers a reward to the Sanye and Dahalo tribesmen to eliminate him. However, Liyongo outwits their clandestine schemes. Next, Daudi Mringwari, the Sultan of Pate, asks his henchmen to persuade Fumo Liyongo to visit Pate city, where he is captured and imprisoned. Liyongo, ever cunning and sly, outwits his captors, managing to obtain a file with which he cuts his chains and flees to freedom. As things stand, the Sultan is too scared to re-arrest Fumo, now an arch nemesis turned nightmare. It's now a wager of who strikes first. And Mringwari does, plotting to kill Liyongo by the hand of his son, from his Galla wife. He buys the would-be assassin’s loyalty and cooperation with the promise of royal favour and his daughter. The poor deluded son takes the bait! The son cunningly extracts the secret of the weapon. At the same time, Fumo is convinced that his son has been bought by his enemy. He rebukes and curses him out. The son is hell-bent on his mission. With his weapon, a copper dagger, the son stabs his sleeping father. But before the melee turns fatal, Fumo manages to arm himself and chases his attacker to a nearby village. Herein marks the high water point of the legend. As it goes, Fumo Liyongo remains in a kneeling position with his bow and arrow aimed at his fleeing attacker, for three days. On the third day Liyongo's wife discovers his lifeless body. The village goes into mourning. His legacy continues to be celebrated through songs, poems and dances. Fumo Liyongo is lionized as a symbol of unity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Mijikenda. His stories serve as a reminder of the importance of courage and the preservation of cultural heritage. Fumo Liyongo’s Shrine is situated at Tosi, a 10-minute drive down a good murram road from Kipini town. However, other than the mound of earth, overgrown with bush, reached on a narrow bush-filled path, there is, sadly, little that separates Fumo's shrine from the surrounding landscape. Kenya has a rich tapestry of legends and heroes that reflect its diverse cultures and historical narratives. Among these is Mekatilili wa Menza, the lionized Giriama elder and prophetess who led here people on a resistance against British colonial rule in the early 20th century.
