Forodhani Restaurant: Scoops of Swahili Cuisine

There is something pleasantly delightful about enjoying a meal by the seaside. The views, the air, sounds, the light – everything tastes better beside the water. Above all, sea air gives you a great appetite. Forodhani Restaurant, at the eastern-end of Old Port, is a great place to discover the flavours of Mombasa whilst gazing out at the old harbour plied by outmoded dhows. With just a narrow entry road betwixt it and the ocean, high on a bluff, it combines the fine views and alluring menu of a coastal bistro with soothing Indian Ocean views peering out to the English Point Marina across the creek, especially memorable from its small but well-laid patio.

On the whole Forodhani Restaurant is a laid back and cozy spot that easily airlifts you over the pleasant oceanfront. The main seating area also features an al fresco terrace facing the waterfront where you can people-watch and see boats docking while you wait for your meal. It is a fairly large establishment with different seating arrangement to suit different guest needs, but ample space is provided along the edge overlooking the coast on the lower, middle and top floors. The favourites on the menu are, of course, the selection of Swahili dishes like biryani, pilau, mshikaki (meat on a skewer) and the doner kebab locally known as shawarma – sizzling on a barbecue. The seafood menu changes seasonally to showcase top quality catch.

Expect fresh seafood like fish cocotte, calamari, prawns, lobster and crabs that you can enjoy steamed, deep-fried or stir-fried with lots of garlic. Their robust menu also includes Indian and continental cuisines. Forodhani Restaurant takes pride in sourcing its ingredients as locally as possible, with fresh fish caught off Mombasa’s coast and produce from the local farms. The portions, in line with the generous Swahili hospitality, are quite filling, the service quick and the overall experience great value for money. No alcohol is served. Other headline coastal restaurants in and around Old Town Mombasa include: The Fort, Fayaz Bakery, Urban Street Food (central Mombasa), Recoda, Tarbouch Café and Shehnai Café.

The best eat-outs can be subjective and depends on personal preferences, budget, and location. Ever-growing in number around Kenya, are an inviting array of eat-outs offering innovative and multi-sensory dining experience. Bringing the world to our plates, with cuisines from around the world. Others, too, have been around for many years now, offering classic cuisine with impeccable service.
