Natural Landmarks in Elgeyo Marakwet Elgeyo Escarpment: A Magnificent Landmark Sometimes known as Kerio Fault, Elgeyo Escarpment is a prominent landmark, both for its sheer scale and beauty. Rising over 1,000 ft, decisively separating the valley and highland, the long cliff of Elgeyo Escarpment sprints the entire 110 km western boundary of Elgeyo Marakwet County from close to Biretwo, in the south, to near Chegilet, in the north. Forming part of the western wall of the Rift Valley, it creates a striking landscape and has significant ecological and geological status. Admired and panegyrized as grand and sublime, the dramatic cliff and waterfalls of Elgeyo Escarpment are exemplified by a unique vegetal profile. It has semi-tropical vegetation on the slopes, while the floor of the valley is covered by dry thorn bush. The highland maintains and evergreen belt of farmland and forests. Every hour of day and season reworks this outstanding landmarks to ever new sceneries. The most comfortable time of year to visit the region is between June and August, when the rains have ended and the temperatures are not excessive. Only the part of the Elgeyo Escarpment between the highlands and the plateau is covered with forest, around Kapchemutwo and Kessup. Rather impressively, the area halfway down the Escarpment is dotted with homesteads, surrounded by corn fields. It a terrifying long drop from here. Fewer examples in Kenya could better demonstrate ‘living life on the edge'. And overcoming fear of heights is only one of the challenges of living here, yet, for forever and a day, this area has been home to the Elgeyo people, who have a long and proud history of thriving here. All along its marches, the Elgeyo Escarpment is a jaw-droppingly beautiful natural marvel. From a vantage point, like Kolol View, it's easy to appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the escarpment. One of the best ways yet to appreciate it is on a "paragliding jump" that takes you over it to the floor of Kerio Valley. Then there's the well-appointed Kerio View Resort, set up right at its edge. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty and enjoy a range of comforts. Cherangani Hills mark the northern boundary of Elgeyo Marakwet County, as they gather-up the western wall of the Rift Valley from where the Elgeyo Escarpment terminates. From Elgeyo Escarpment the contiguous Cherangani Hills extends the wall of the Great Rift Valley northerly to Uganda, on its procession to the Red Sea. To the east, the Elgeyo Escarpment drops abruptly to floor of Kerio Valley, while westwards the land falls away gently to the plains of Trans-Nzoia County. Formed due to faulting, these range of hills are renowned for their rich biodiversity, with diverse flora and fauna. The hills support a variety of all-important ecosystems.
