Chepsangor Hill Coffee: Unexpected Niche

Though coffee growing had a relatively late start in Nandi, still confined to small farms, the industry has gained and maintained a impressive reputation. Like in the central highlands just south of the Equator, coffee in Nandi, north of the Equator, has been recognized for its high-quality, meticulous preparation, and exquisite flavors. Working with small-scale farmers across the county, they ensure these exceptional coffees gain good accolades. The highland climate, with warm days and cool nights, produces gainful conditions for cultivating sweet, dense cherry.

Chepsangor Hill Coffee is part of over 500 small scale farmers delivering to Chepsangor Factory, run by Chepsangor Farmers’ Cooperative Society (CFCS). Members of Chepsango FCS cultivate coffee at 1,750 meters above sea level and Chepsangor Factory takes every action to preserve the exceptional quality of the cherry delivered by their members. Farmers delivering to Chepsangor cultivate primarily SL28, Ruiru 11 and Batian in small coffee gardens that are, on average, smaller than 1 hectares. They are cultivated with a serious eye to sustainability and Good Agricultural Practices, with minimal environmental impact where possible.

Batian, named after the highest peak on Mt. Kenya, is resistant to both CBD and CLR. Similar to Batian, Ruiru 11 is a new variety known for its disease resistance and high yields. It also starts yielding fruit after just 2 years. After intake, cherry is pulped and fermented for about 48 hours. Consecutively, the coffee is washed clean water and soaked for 24 hours. Then, parchment is laid to dry on raised beds. Workers rake parchment frequently to ensure even drying. They cover drying parchment during the hottest time of day, to maintain slow, even drying and at night, to shelter from moisture. It takes 10 to 21 days for parchment to dry.
