Wildlife Conservancies in Tana River Bura East Community Conservancy: Up and Away Launched in 2016 in partnership with the community of Ijara, covering 1.2 million acres in Nanighi, Bura, Galmagala and Masabubu, Bura East Conservancy abuts with the Arawale National Reserve. Along this contiguous southern area of low shrub and patchy grassland are enormous wildlife resources. The area is inhabited by Pokomo, Somali and Orma, the latter being a pastoralist community who keep livestock of camels, cattle, sheeps, goats and sometimes donkeys. All constantly patrol the banks of the Tana and the small water pans around the conservancy. Some sections of the lowland dry forests and grassland within the Bura East Conservancy remain in their natural and most undisturbed state, while in other parts there is alteration by the invasive plant species that have taken root here. Key wildlife include: Hirola, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Grevy’s zebra, hyena and warthog. At the moment opportunities for touring are undeveloped, the key focus being a strive for the diminution and resolution of human wildlife conflict, livestock management, water security, general peace, and wildlife safeguard. Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
