Bunyala Rice Scheme

Irrigation Schemes in Busia Bunyala Rice Scheme: Pride of Nzoia The Bunyala Rice Scheme is a large-scale irrigation project at Bunyala. This is located 14 km east of Port Victoria and 2 km outside the border with Siaya County. Alternatively, if approaching from Sio Port, it is 21 km travelling southeast then just south of west to reach it. Bunyala Irrigation Scheme, under the aegis of National Irrigation Board , began in 1959 with an initial property of 534 acres under paddy rice production. It was envisioned as a large-scale irrigation project to cultivate rice, taking advantage of the fertile soils and plenty water resources in the area. The scheme covers an area along the lower reaches of the Nzoia River and its tributaries. Irrigation water is pumped from the Nzoia River, flowing by gravity through open earth channel to the rice farms. Increased demand for rice spurred on the installation of two new pumps, in 2007, to further increase and improve its output, with an increase in acreage from 534 acres to 1,880 acres. The scheme includes a network of canals, dykes, and water diversion structures to distribute water from the Nzoia River and its tributaries to the rice fields. Water is diverted during the rainy season and stored in reservoirs for use during the dry season. The primary crop cultivated in the Bunyala Rice Scheme is rice, although other crops such as maize, beans, and vegetables may also be grown. Rice cultivation is carried out in paddy fields using both traditional and modern farming techniques. It plays a significant role in the local economy of Bunyala, providing employment opportunities for farmers, laborers, and other workers involved in rice cultivation and processing. It also contributes to food security and agricultural productivity. Although not a common touring attraction, the rice paddies at Bunyala Rich Scheme offer great scenery, each stage of the season – vegetative, reproductive to ripening – having a contrasting aspect. The impressive backdrop with a series of conical hills, represents man's ability to manipulate nature in a pleasurably agreeable way. The Bunyala Rice Scheme has the potential for further expansion to increase rice production and improve livelihoods. However, addressing the challenges faced by the scheme will require more investment and innovation Kenya has implemented various irrigation schemes to improve agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and promote economic development. Irrigation plays a crucial role in Kenya's agricultural sector, particularly in areas prone to drought and erratic rainfall, by providing a reliable source of water.
