Wildlife Conservancies in Isiolo Biliqo Bulesa Community Conservancy The 377,300 hectare (3,773 km2) Biliqo Bulesa Community Conservancy, roughly enclosing the six settlements of Dima Adho, Biliqo Marara, Biliqo, Godha, Bulesa, Awarsitu, with a population of 10,000 inhabitants of the semi-nomadic Borana community, was begun in 2007 as an integrated livestock and game rangeland. These settlements are located along B9 Garba Tula-Merti Road, and there are no areas where livestock grazing is excluded. Most of the conservancy is grassland interspersed with bush cover which provides pasture for livestock. Dry and wet season grazing areas are well defined. The primary water sources are the Ewaso Nyiro River that forms the southern boundary of the conservancy, supporting a large Doum palm forest along its banks, as well as seasonal laghas and boreholes. For tourism, the conservancy is a corridor and dispersal area for prolific wildlife. Resident game include elephant, lion, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, kudu, gerenuk, and smaller mammals. Equally, the area has large populations of game-birds including sand grouse and guineafowl, previously utilized in commercial bird shooting that generated revenue for the Borana community. The Merti Plateau sits embossed into the barren landscape on the eastern edge of the Biliqo Bulesa Conservancy. Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being.
