National Parks & Reserves in Kilifi The Amazing Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve Covering about 420 km2 in the mid-east of Kilifi County, and flanked by the B8 Malindi Road on its eastern side from Kilifi to Gede, Arabuko-Sokoke Reserve is the largest and last surviving fragment of Kenya’s coastal forests. Likewise, it is Kilifi’s most important forest. 6 km2 inside the forest is allocated as a national reserve and managed by Kenya Wildlife Service. A 2 km2 patch is also managed by National Museums of Kenya for the preservation of the ancient Gede Ruins. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve and its opposite-number Shimba Hills National Reserve, in the neighboring Kwale County, combined, hold the largest coastal forests in East Africa. Both sites are important for conservation of birds and are listed as one of the twenty-five biodiversity hotspots in the world. These forests consists of several distinct habitats, including lowland tropical forest, Cynometra forest, mixed forest, and a small patch of mangrove forest near the coast. The bracing beauty of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is best enjoyed on a walking safari. Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve is nature-lovers paradise, and the walk goes past an assorted diversity of flora and fauna. Pause to listen and the forest is alive and enchanting. Over 270 species of birds have been recorded in the forest. Nearly 40 mammal species, including the elephant, buffalo, civet, caracal, syke’s Monkeys, baboons and lesser Galago, call this home. Its obvious appeal make it a popular destination for eco-tourism. Visitors can enjoy the forest through guided nature walks, birdwatching tours, and exploration at nearby Kipepeo Butterfly Project. The forest itself is of three types: Cynometra-dominated thickets covering more than half of its area, Brachystegia-dominated woodlands (Miombo), and mixed forest. It has a network of good, well-marked walking trails, and more than 30 km of driving tracks linked to different forest sections. Guides offer insights on its anatomy and taxonomy, including various rituals still carried out within it, and the ancient medicinal properties of numerous plant types along a walking tour that culminates at Nyari Viewpoint with unprecedented views over the forest canopy. Being the largest remnant of the coastal forest that once stretched from Somalia to Mozambique, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve is a treasured and significant natural reserve. Its location near the coast and just off the B8 Mombasa-Malindi Road makes it ideal and convenient to access. Entry charges in Kes: Citizen Adult 200, Child 50; Resident Adult 400, Child 200. The main gate is located 110 km north of Mombasa and 20 km south of Malindi Town. Mida Creek, a beautiful tidal inlet with six species of mangrove trees, is about 1 km from the forest entrance.
