Found 4 km from Nyali Bridge, Bombolulu Workshop, started in 1969 under the auspices of the Association for the Physically Disable of Kenya, employs upwards of a hundred artisans, artists, carvers and engravers who fabricate fine handmade crafts. A social enterprise dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. On arrival, most are surprised at the level of workmanship in the crafts exhibited, and of the high spirits of the residents. Every year, thousands of assorted designs are made for items of jewelry, wood, leather and furnishings. The center also umps Kenyan culture through traditional dance performances and cultural exhibitions.
The workshops have a production capacity of nearly 250,000 unique artisan items per year. Many years of successful exporting have established it as a reliable supplier and member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WTO). Some of the key highlights include its exhibitions, shopping area, cultural centre and guided tours. Behind the restaurant are mock-ups of Kikuyu, Maasai and Luo traditional huts. A cover charge of Kes 450 is payable. Workshop up-time is from 8am to 12:45pm or from 2pm to 5pm Monday through Friday, while the Cultural Centre is open all day from 8am to 5pm. The showroom at Bombolulu Coast Workshop & Cultural Centre is open on Saturday and Sunday; but the studio remains closed.
