Machakos County has rather unique physical and topographical features. Hills and a small plateau rising to 1800-2100m above sea level constitute the central part of the county. To the west, the county has a large plateau elevated to about 1700 ms that is southeast of Machakos Town. The county rises from 790 to 1594 m above sea level. To the northwest, it has a few stand-alone hills. Some of the areas in the northwest typified by hills include: Mutituni, Mwala, Mua, Iveti-Mua and Kathiani.

The land in Machakos County is generally under forests, government reserves, towns, game reserves, farms, ranches, industries, mines and livestock ranges. The absence of a county / national land use policy has led to slow development, in the proliferation of many informal settlement, inadequate infrastructure, congestion, degradation, unplanned urban centres and pressure on farming land. Agriculture is the sector, and the main cash crops are coffee, pineapples and sorghum, which are mainly grown in Kangundo, Masii, Matungulu, Kathiani, Yatta, and Mwala.

Machakos County has a number of touring sites that are yet to be exploited due to poor road networks and inadequate funding. The famous touring attractions include: Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, Iveti Forest, Kyamwilu gravitational defying area and the wood carving at Wamunyu.
